Elections Canada apologizes to Kativik Regional Government for election shortcomings

OTTAWA — Elections Canada apologized Tuesday to the Kativik Regional Government in Quebec for problems their community faced in voting in the last federal election.

Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault travelled to Kuujjuaq to apologize in person at a Kativik Regional Government council meeting on Tuesday.

Following the April 28 federal election, Perrault acknowledged there were problems that meant some electors in Nunavik were not able to cast their vote because a lack of staffing led to polls closing well ahead of schedule.

The Tuesday meeting was an opportunity for Perrault to speak directly with elected regional representatives, and to provide an update on the ongoing fact-finding inquiry launched by Elections Canada, a spokesperson says.

Elections Canada says the meeting also gave Perrault the opportunity to set the tone on the path forward, by looking forward to work with communities and organizations in the region to ensure elections run smoothly in the next general election.

The Kativik Regional Government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
