CALGARY — U.S. President Donald Trump’s plane has touched down at the Calgary airport, as he gets set to join other world leaders for the G7 summit in nearby Kananaskis, Alta.
It’s the first time Trump has been to Canada in seven years, when he attended the G7 gathering in Quebec.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with Trump on Monday morning as the summit kicks off.
It’s an opportunity for Carney to work on relations with the country’s biggest trading partner, after months of instability caused by Trump’s trade war and repeated musings about annexing Canada.
The summit comes days after Israel and Iran began exchanging missile strikes and the conflict in the Middle East is expected to be a major topic.
The G7 also includes France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and Italy, as well as the European Union.
On Tuesday, the summit is expected to focus on foreign policy and involve at least 10 invited leaders from non-member countries or international institutions.
More coming.
