Manitoba premier declares state of emergency over wildfires, says military aid coming

By Canadian Press on May 28, 2025.

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA — Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has ordered a provincewide state of emergency as his province deals with a series of crippling wildfires.

Kinew says he has spoken to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has agreed to send in the military.

Kinew says the fires have forced 17,000 people across several communities to flee in what he calls the largest such exodus in living memory in Manitoba.

The evacuations include all 5,000 residents of the city of Flin Flon.

Those residents were told just hours earlier to head south ahead of a fire that began just north of them over the boundary in Creighton, Sask., but has since exploded in size.

The 1,200 residents of Creighton were also ordered to leave.
