Trump’s tariffs will fundamentally change global trading system: Carney

By Canadian Press on April 2, 2025.

WASHINGTON — Prime Minister Mark Carney says U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff regime will “fundamentally change the global trading system.”

Carney, who is meeting with his cabinet committee on Canada-U.S. relations in Ottawa, says Canada will fight American tariffs with countermeasures after the country was excluded from a list of new reciprocal tariffs announced by Trump today.

A White House fact sheet says goods imported under the existing Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade will not face Trump’s latest round of reciprocal tariffs.

Trump unveiled this afternoon a lengthy list of tariff levels most other countries will face.

Trump says he is going ahead with previously announced 25 per cent tariffs on automobile imports starting Thursday.

The U.S. is also imposing 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S., including from Canada.
