As road conditions improve, Alberta RCMP is reminding drivers to slow down and remember the dangers of speeding. “Speeding is incredibly normalized, but it’s important to prioritize your safety over saving a few minutes,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Speeding remains one of the biggest threats to traffic safety and can have devastating consequences.” Last year, the Alberta RCMP issued 47,989 speeding tickets. In April alone, 4,949 speeding violations were given out. Alberta Transportation said approximately one in four fatal collisions involve unsafe speed, with most of these collisions occurring in rural areas. While it can be tempting to speed, especially when running late, RCMP ask drivers to adhere to a few tips. Drivers are reminded to follow posted speed limits, especially in school, playground and construction zones as these areas often have high pedestrian traffic. Leaving early can help to give residents the time to get where they need to go without the temptation to use unsafe speeds. “Speeding isn’t just surpassing legal speed limits, but also driving too fast for weather, road and traffic conditions,” said RCMP. “If you are a passenger in a speeding vehicle, speak up. Don’t let speeding be the norm.” 7
