This year the City of Medicine Hat will host three compost giveaway events beginning in April with free SureGrow Multi-Purpose Compost for residents.

The three dates are April 18, May 9 and Sept. 12 this year at 1453 Hutchinson Ave., across from the City of Medicine Hat Municipal Works facility along Kipling Street.

Gardeners and home growers are encouraged to grab their shovels and a large container to load up on free multi-purpose compost that improves the physical and chemical characteristics of local soil, especially highly compacted soil, allowing increased water retention and holding capacity.

SureGrow can help replenish missing nutrients in the soil and prompt healthier root growth while improving the overall soil structure.

The compost also helps with disease suppression and pest reduction.

It is produced under industry standards to meet the requirements of category “A” compost. According to the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, this compost can be used in any application, such as agricultural lands, residential gardens, horticultural operations, the nursery industry and other businesses.

Residents need to bring their own shovel and container to self-load up to 10 gallons and transport the compost.

Last year the city gave away more than 36,000 kilograms of its high-quality compost to more than 700 residents.

The first giveaway on April 18 runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
