Ronald Bell, former fire chief of the Medicine Hat Fire Department, has passed away at the age of 93.
Bell began his 33-year career with the fire department in 1960 serving as firefighter for 17 years before being promoted to deputy chief of fire prevention in 1977.
In 1982, Bell was promoted to deputy chief of firefighting and two years later would helm the service as chief from 1984 to 1993.
During his years of service Bell helped introduce a new fire prevention program and several comprehensive firefighter training programs, which enhanced both public safety and the professional development of the service.
“Known for his fairness, steady leadership and deep respect for both the fire service and those who served within it, Chief Bell led during some of the community’s most significant incidents,” reads a condolence message from Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services.
Some of those significant events include derailment of a Canadian Pacific Railway freight train on Jan. 7, 1984. The train lost power to its braking system and crashed at an excessive speed in the city’s river valley, killing one crew member.
The following year the Hy-Point Feeds facility and parts of the main building of Alberta Linseed Oil caught fire causing a significant blaze leading to the neighbourhood needing to be evacuated. Six employees were injured and one was killed during the fire in 1985.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Chief Bell’s family, friends and all those who have the privilege of serving alongside him. His legacy will not be forgotten,” continues the condolence message.
Bell was married to his late wife Anna (Ann) for 59 years, and according to his obituary, “His greatest joy was time spent with Ann and their children, especially during family vacations. It was this sense of togetherness that defined family for him.”
Bell leaves behind three children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and is predeceased by his brother.
Bell was born in Medicine Hat on June 28, 1932 and passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026.
