The city’s annual Litter Blitz campaign designed to foster a collaborative approach to cleanup of parks and public green spaces officially kicked off Wednesday and will run until Apr. 18.

Residents can take part in the Litter Blitz at their own leisure and can pick up a free cleanup supplies package from several locations around the city.

Individuals or groups can choose any park or green space and fill up trash bags with litter collected in the area. Once those bags are full, residents are able to call or email parks and recreation crews who will come pick up the trash.

“Every year, residents share an exciting variety of motives behind why they participate in the Litter Blitz – whether it’s a love of their neighbourhood park, the joy of keeping the community litter-free, enjoying a family outing, or team-building with a sports team, business, organization and so many more,” said parks technician Jeff Quinlan.

Participants can also enter for a chance to win a prize by sharing a photo of themselves, their family, friend, or group picking up litter around the community and tag the City of Medicine Hat on Facebook or Instagram.

Residents interested in picking up a free cleanup supplies kit can visit the parks and recreation office, Police Point Park Nature Centre or the Big Marble Go Centre during operational hours.

“It’s great to see so many Hatters share in our passion for being good environmental stewards, and we look forward to once again joining forces on this annual collaboration,” added Quinlan.

At the conclusion of the Litter Blitz campaign the city will be hosting a free barbecue for all participants during Earth Day celebrations in Police Point Park to recognize the hard work and community contributions.

The Earth Day event will run on April 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the appreciation barbecue will begin at 1:30 p.m.
