The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce is holding an information session for members of the business community to learn about the forthcoming Saamis Solar project.

The chamber is hoping to provide members with accurate, consistent information as Medicine Hat evaluates its path in the evolving energy landscape.

‘Understanding the Energy Transition in Medicine Hat’ will convene the Chamber’s Energy Transition Working Group to provide information about what the solar park will mean for the region’s long-term energy outlook, economic development and industrial investment strategy.

The event will take place Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. in the Chamber Boardroom.

The session will provide participants with background on the proposed first phase of the solar park, scheduled to deliver 75 megawatts, as well as the potential build-out, which is designed to deliver up to 325 MW.

The event will also walk participants through the City of Medicine Hat’s energy diversification goals, regulatory drivers and the financial and operational considerations, insofar as that information is available for public consumption.

For businesses around the city seeking clarity on various aspects of the energy transition and rate setting, the chamber is looking to answer questions about project phasing, costs, funding models, operations, property tax implications, impact on utility rates and contingency planning if federal or provincial supports do not materialize.

City council unanimously approved the $131.5-million renewable energy project in February. It is expected to be operational by 2028.

Registration is required to attend this event. Spaces are limited. Registration is available on the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce webpage.
