newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Next month the Unison at Veiner Centre is hosting a workshop in collaboration with the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories for individuals living with dementia, as well as their support system. The workshop is aimed to help participants learn more about how dementia impacts the brain and how to make informed choices to live a better life during every stage of the neurodegenerative disease that destroys memory as well as cognitive functions. The session will offer a welcoming space and will allow participants to ask questions and share support available in Medicine Hat. The workshop runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Apr. 8 in the Boardroom. Registration is required by calling 403-529-8307, in person or online at the Veiner Centre’s website. Paint night Paintergirl will be back hosting another paint night at the Veiner Centre next month for seasoned artists and “two-left-thumb-types.” The session includes a relaxing step-by-step guide by Paintergirl as she teaches participants how to create a “joyful creation,” and with all supplies included. The workshop runs 6-9 p.m. in the Craft Room on Apr. 9 and costs $35 for Veiner members and $40 for non-members, cash only. Registration is required at the reception desk, or by calling 403-529-8307. Free counselling Through a collaboration with Medicine Hat Family Service, the Veiner Centre is offering free counselling for members every second Thursday of each month. Members will have the opportunity to speak one on one with a professional counsellor who will be able to support issues such as processing life concerns, addressing loneliness, understanding safety and trust, as well as providing tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle and build friendships. Healthy boundaries workshop The second part of the “Setting Healthy Boundaries” workshop is scheduled at the end of month and will focus on how to respond when boundaries are crossed and how to move forward in a healthy way. The Veiner Centre collaborated with Medicine Hat Family Service to host the dual workshop that provides attendees tips and techniques for establishing boundaries. Part two runs Mar. 29 in the Boardroom from 2:15-3:30 p.m. and is free for everyone. To register, call 403-529-8307. Barn Dance Next month the Veiner Centre will host its inaugural hoedown as it gets set to host an old-time Barn Dance. Guests are encouraged to dust off their boots and put on their favourite Western gear to enjoy a night of music and dancing while connecting with others. “Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or trying it for the first time, this fun, welcoming evening is all about enjoying music and learning a few steps,” reads promotional material. The Barn Dance runs 7-10 p.m. on Apr. 11, tickets are $10 per person, cash only. No registration is required, however questions can be directed to 403-529-8307. 26
