newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Alberta’s government is investing in provincial parks in Budget 2026, which includes $275 million to upgrade trails, expand trailheads and increase campsites and campground amenities. In 2026-27, $87 million will be invested toward more than 70 campground, day-use area and trial enhancement projects. Next year will see an additional $102 million spent on parks and public land, followed by $88 million in 2028-29. “Budget 2026 is focused on building what matters to Albertans. Alberta’s government is investing in the places people value today, while enhancing them for future generations,” said Ministry of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen. “Funding for projects in every corner of this province will open corridors for Albertans, and the increased number of visitors enjoying our landscapes every year. We are excited for the opportunities these investments create for Albertans, ensuring they have access to safe, memorable experiences however they choose to recreate.” In addition to maintaining and improving existing infrastructure, the Alberta government is looking to develop 900 campsites by 2023. Projects include developing a Crowsnest Lake day-use area in the Livingston Public Land use zone, improving outdoor recreation facilities in high-use areas and expanding trail networks on public land in the Canmore area. The nearby Kinbrook Island Provincial Park will also see upgrades funded by this budget, including a replacement for the shower building. These investments follow $78 million in 2025-26 to support 56 completed projects that improved campgrounds, trails, day-use areas and utilities across Crown lands. 11
