Medicine Hat College has appointed Terence Kowalchuk as a public member to its board of governors.
Kowalchuk, a chartered professional accountant, has held roles with the provincial and federal governments and is currently the chief finance officer of Weddingstar.
Additionally, Kowalchuk has worked with the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association, Medicine Hat Soccer Association and the Medicine Hat & District Canada Day and Cultural Festival Association.
Kowalchuk has also held roles within the college as a member of the business administration advisory committee and serving as assistant coach for the Rattlers Men’s Soccer Team.
“It is a profound honour to be appointed to the Medicine Hat College board of governors. I believe a thriving college is the heartbeat of our community and this role is especially meaningful to me as my own children are part of the college community,” said Kowalchuk. “My goal is to ensure we continue to provide the high-quality education necessary to develop our local talent, while creating an environment that encourages young people to move to and ultimately build their lives in Medicine Hat.”
The role of the MHC board of governors is to provide strategic direction and support to the institution while representing the interests of the public, students and employees.
The board consists of seven public members, one academic member, two student members and one non-academic member who serve a three-year term, as well as MHC president and CEO Kevin Shufflebotham, who serves as ex officio.
“The board works together to make important decisions to support college activity, and I believe Terence’s experience will be a complement to our team,” said board chair Sarah Mackenzie. “Terence’s background demonstrates his commitment to our community and we look forward to working with him as we support Medicine Hat College.”
On average, the board meets five times each year.
