newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com A man was sent to hospital with minor injuries after he was struck while attempting to cross the street by a vehicle in Brooks last Saturday evening. Brooks RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision at the intersection of Second Avenue W. and Centre Street at approximately 8 p.m. on Feb. 28. Police say two men exited a parked vehicle on Second Avenue W., and attempted to cross the street. While one of the males observed an oncoming vehicle driving on the road and stopped, the other man proceeded to cross the street and was subsequently struck. EMS attended the scene and the man was transported to hospital with minor injuries. RCMP would like to remind pedestrians and motorists to exercise caution at intersections and in low-light conditions following the collision. “Pedestrians are encouraged to use marked crosswalks where available and ensure it is safe to cross before entering the roadway,” reads a media release. “Drivers are reminded to remain alert and watch for pedestrians, particularly in busy or poorly lit areas.” Distracted drivers Last month Brooks RCMP issued 19 violation tickets and provided five warnings to motorists who were driving distracted. RCMP say distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of collisions in Alberta and are reminding motorists that later this month distracted driving fines will be increasing in Alberta from $300 to $390. Traffic officers are reminding motorists that distracted driving includes any activities taking eyes off the road and hands off the wheel, including using a cellphone, adjusting GPS or music, having animals on your lap, viewing any reading material and engaging in distracting behaviour. “Distracted driving charges also come with possible insurance implications,” reads a press release. “In some cases, drivers are flagged as high risk and can see inflated insurance premiums or cancellations of policies.” 13
