newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Last month Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services responded to 162 calls for service, including five structure fires and four ice and aquatics related incidents. Additionally, fire crews responded to 14 outdoor fires, 15 motor vehicle collisions and 20 calls for medical assistance. Fire chief Chad Eakins presented the Fire and Emergency Services 2025 year-in-review report last week to members of the public services committee and reported local firefighters are able to exceed a goal of responding with a primary engine to an incident within six minutes and 20 seconds. Earlier in February crews also visited Notre Dame Academy to talk about battery safety and share important fire and life safety tips while having students compete to see who can put on a full firefighter turnout gear the fastest. To continue public education efforts fire services also released a short informational video on how discarded batteries in the garbage can cause large landfill fires that are difficult for firefighters to douse. Local firefighters also responded to 41 alarm calls and 25 calls related to carbon monoxide and other gases. 8
