newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Thursday afternoon Medicine Hat police issued a public service announcement responding to concerns over an obviously fictional social media post referencing a local elementary school, as well as businesses and services located in Crestwood. Police say they were made aware of a social media post from McBride’s Bakery on Wednesday and can confirm the story being shared is purely fictional and not based on any actual incident in the community. “Police have spoken with the business owner and there is no threat to public safety related to this post,” reads the public service announcement. “We recognize that messages of this nature can cause concerns for families, students, staff and community members.” On Wednesday evening McBride’s Bakery’s Facebook page posted an intentionally fictional short story about U.S immigration agents known as ICE agents arriving outside Crestwood School, describing a narrative on how local teachers and students would handle the situation. The story eventually leads to a tense fatal standoff between parents and ICE agents inside the school and describes parents barricading themselves with their children inside the school. The story also paints a picture of dozens of ICE agents arriving in the neighbourhood and a scene without local law enforcement present. The social media post is accompanied by 10 photographs of the school and surrounding community where the fictional events take place. Several fictional individuals in the social media post were killed or left with permanent injuries following the large-scale raid of the school, and the original social media post had received more than 650 comments and more than 40 shares at the time of publication. The short story also mentions Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright and writes that “Corporal J. Wright” was commemorated for his role in the school raid. Police say they encourage residents to verify information through official and reliable sources before sharing it further. The Medicine Hat Public School Division also shared the public announcement from the Medicine Hat Police Service. In Canada, the Canada Border Service Agency is the primary federal agency responsible for enforcing immigration and refugee laws, not ICE, which a U.S. agency only. 14
