Cypress County outlines acceptable uses and processes of AI for staff

By medicinehatnews on February 20, 2026.

Cypress County council took a stance this week on the use of artificial intelligence among staff.

During Tuesday’s public meeting, it was stressed that there were no plans to initiate significant AI usage within the county, but as the technology becomes increasingly prevalent, administration sought a policy to outline acceptable use.

Said policy states that AI-assisted outputs should be explainable, and all users, including councillors, committee members, employees, contractors and other authorized users need to be able to explain how generative AI assisted in the process. No AI-created work is permitted to be presented as solely human-created.

Policy also stresses that decisions are the responsibility of the human using the technology, so all work must be checked for bias and accuracy and cannot be the sole factor on a decision.

Administration highlighted that information security protocols must still be followed, and sensitive information cannot be input into open or publicly available AI environments where the county does not have full control of how data is processed, stored, or used.
