newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The list of names given to babies in Alberta last year was released Tuesday, and it contained few surprises. The top name in the province for boys was Noah for the seventh year in a row, while Olivia retained the top spot on the girls list for the 13th straight year. Olivia has remained the most popular name longer than any other on record, with the next longest-reigning name, Ethan, holding the top for nine years between 2001 and 2009. The girls’ top five was rounded out by Amelia in second, Emma and Sophia tied for third, Charlotte in fourth and Violet in fifth. The name Eliana entered the girls top 10 for the first time, with 104 babies across the province sharing the name. The top boys names of the year included Theodore in second, Oliver in third, Henry in fourth and Jack and Lucas tied for fifth. The top 10 names for boys saw some new additions this year, with James returning to the list and Muhammad joining the ranks for the first time. Alberta parents looking for more unique monikers took inspiration from pop culture, with names like Zendaya or Beckham, or from the beautiful landscapes of the province with names like Jasper or Rose. More than 52,000 babies were born in Alberta in 2025. Alberta parents chose more than 14,500 unique names for their newborns. 11
