Construction in Medicine Hat got off to a strong start in the first month of 2026, according to monthly building permit statistics released by the city’s planning and development services department.
Five residential permits were issued in the month of January, including for one single-family home and four apartments, for a total value of just over $1.1 million.
The bulk of January’s permits were comprised by alterations to commercial buildings. Ten permits were issued for commercial alterations for a total value of just over $12.5 million.
Altogether, 38 permits were issued in January that created or modified eight units. The total value of those permits was just over $14.5 million.
It’s a significant jump compared to the same month last year, when only 18 permits were issued for a total value of $2.6 Last year saw the total value of building permits substantially higher than the previous year in 2024, but inflated notably by the singular permit issued for the upcoming Holy Trinity school worth more than $67 million.
Fewer permits were issued in 2025 than the previous year, although the average value of individual permits was significantly higher.
