The local Save-on-Foods will ensure teens at the Medicine Hat Public Library will always have access to snacks at the Honeycomb House. “Save-On-Foods has come forward and offered lifetime sponsorship for providing snacks in our space for the teens visiting the library,” said teen librarian Stephanie Kuhn. Keeping teen visitors fed can be a significant task, with the library often going through roughly a full cart of groceries each month to keep shelves stocked. It’s a credit to the work of Kuhn and other library staff to develop the space since opening in the summer of 2023. Thus far, Save-on-Foods has already provided various goods such as teas, fruit juices, juice boxes, bread, peanut butter, jam, cookies, oatmeal, fresh fruit, Mr. Noodles and Kraft Dinner. When Kuhn reached out about a possible sponsorship, store manager Tony Segouin says he was struck by the number of teens the Honeycomb House sees each month. “I found out that they reach 300-plus students a month,” said Segoin. “We want to let teens know that we’re here in the community to support them in whatever thing that they need.” Kuhn says snacks are important in the Honeycomb House, as part of the fight against food insecurity for teens, or even simply to tide students over who sometimes come to the space right after school and don’t get home until after dinner. “We just want to say a huge thank-you to Save-On-Foods for taking on this major sponsorship,” Kuhn says. “It is a huge burden off of the library’s shoulders and we can’t wait to work more with them and offer this amazing space and resources to the teens in our community.” The space has been dubbed the Save-On-Foods Bee Bites Snack Zone in honour of the contribution. 10
