newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com On Feb. 11 the Unison at Veiner Centre will begin booking appointments for its free annual tax clinic that will begin at the end of the month and run until April. The clinic is open for individuals who are at least 50 years old and have an individual income limit of $40,000 a year, or $55,000 as a couple. The clinic is also open to AISH clients. Volunteers will be on hand to help seniors and AHIS clients fill out their income tax returns at no charge and are trained to make sure clients are qualifying for all senior benefits offered by the province, as well as securing GST rebates. To book an appointment, beginning Feb. 11, call 403-529-8364. Clients are also able to drop off their taxes to be completed. The clinics will begin Feb. 25 at the Strathcona Centre, and continue until April 30. Wellbeing workshop On Wednesday the Veiner Centre will also host a workshop focused on mental well-being during the winter months. “Wellbeing Workshop: Beating the Winter Blues” is presented in partnership with members of the Medicine Hat Family Service and offers practical ways to boost mood, energy and overall wellbeing during the shorter days of the winter months. “Whether you’re looking for new strategies or simply a space to connect and reflect, this workshop offers a welcoming environment for learning and conversation,” reads a promotional advertisement. The workshop will run from 2:15-3:30 p.m. in the boardroom on Feb. 11. To register call 403-529-8307, or visit the reception desk. Safety series Next month the Veiner Centre is hosting a free workshop with experts from the Alberta Rural Crime Watch Association, Better Business Bureau and RBC Wealth Management focused on preventing frauds and scams. The senior safety series is called “Frauds & Scams. Recognize, Protect & Prevent,” and will showcase how scams and frauds are constantly changing and provide warning sings to recognize scams and protect yourself. The free workshop will run Mar. 19 in the North MP Room from 9:30 a.m. to noon and will include complimentary drinks and snacks as well as door prizes. Meals on Wheels bottle drive From now until the end of March, Hatters can donate bottles to support the Veiner Centre’s Meals on Wheels program at Shamrock Bottle Depot. All proceeds raised will support the essential meal delivery service which provides nutritious meals to people with limited mobility, prepared and served by a team of volunteer cooks and drivers. The bottle drive is part of the fifth annual March for Meals donation campaign. Hatters can choose to donate recyclables to support the program at the Shamrock Bottle Depot location on Altawana Drive until Mar. 31, or drop off bottles at the Veiner Centre. 21
