With 3,858 business break-and-enters across Alberta RCMP jurisdiction throughout 2025, Mounties are sharing some tips to keep the number of incidents trending downward. Possible ways for business owners to make their property less attractive to potential thieves include installing and consistently activating an alarm system, good quality cameras that provide full coverage of the space or adding shutters or bars to windows. Interior lights that can be left on and motion lights at points of entry can also help increase visibility and deter anyone unlawfully seeking entry. Business owners should also keep all valuables secured away from windows after hours and ensure they know the locations of all keys or fobs which grant access. “Budgeting for security measures such as sturdy locks, quality cameras and an alarm system can pay off in the long run. These investments can make a difference in preventing theft and identifying criminals,” said Alberta RCMP. Alberta RCMP encourages the public and business owners to report any suspicious activity to police. Those who witness a crime in progress are reminded to call 911. 6
