Medicine Hat is encouraging residents who identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit to submit by the end of the month an expression of interest to be part of an Indigenous Advisory Circle.
The advisory circle is being established to provide guidance, advice and lived-experience perspectives between the city and Indigenous Peoples and make sure those voices are included in future decision-making processes.
The city says the advisory circle is part of a commitment toward Truth and Reconciliation, and will host meaningful engagement, support respectful relationships and expand informed decision-making.
“The creation of the Indigenous Advisory Circle is an important step, which creates a culturally respectful space for dialogue, accountability and shared responsibility,” said Kellie Grace, Indigenous relations co-ordinator. “It recognizes that Reconciliation requires Indigenous voices to be included in decisions that impact the community.”
Its primary purpose is to advise and support city departments on issues related to persons who identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit, and will be run under the City of Medicine Hat’s Community Development department.
A list of its goals includes strengthening relationships with Indigenous nations, supporting reconciliation efforts, enhancing Indigenous inclusion in municipal policies and programs and promoting Indigenous culture, education and visibility.
“The city is committed to creating a circle that reflects community diversity and supports meaningful participation,” reads a release.
An online registration form with fewer than 10 questions can be found on the city’s website. Applications must be submitted by Feb. 27 at 3 p.m.
Meetings will be held bi-monthly.
