newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Medicine Hat Firefighters responded to 160 calls for service in January including five structure fires and nine outdoor fires. Additionally, crews responded to three vehicle fire calls and attended 11 motor vehicle collisions. Crews also responded to three calls related to ice and aquatics. Last month fire crews also responded to 27 medical calls, 35 alarms and 13 calls related to carbon monoxide and other gasses. Firefighters continued their public education efforts and visited students at St. Patrick’s School on Jan. 13 to host a practice fire drill and talk about making a fire escape plan at home and safe uses of devices with ion-lithane batteries, like phones, tablets and other rechargeable electronics. Additionally, fire crews posted new warnings to social media pages regarding ice conditions in the warm weather, as well as a case study of a devastating house fire that started in the U.S. where a portable battery pack was plugged in and being charged. Sparky the Fire Dog and other members of the Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services were also cheering on the Tigers onto victory while hosting an information booth at the game at Co-op Place on Jan. 10 vs. the Lethbridge Hurricanes. 8
