asmith@medicinehatnews.com Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson plans to visit the United Arab Emirates to strengthen agricultural trade partnerships. This will open additional overseas markets for Alberta’s agriculture and food products, says the province, as Sigurdson both enhances existing partnerships and pursues new opportunities. “This mission is a valuable opportunity to connect with partners from across the Middle East and Asia to showcase Alberta as a reliable, high-quality agri-food trading partner,” said Sigurdson. “By attending Gulfood and meeting directly with global buyers and investors, we are opening doors to new markets that support food security abroad and create real opportunities for Alberta producers and processors.” Gulfood is the world’s largest show for food and hospitality businesses. During this visit, Sigurdson will meet investors, importers, distributors, buyers and industry decision makers to promote Alberta agriculture. The UAE is Alberta’s 13th largest export market for agricultural products with total exports valued at $133.8 million in 2024. It is also the fifth largest export market for Alberta canola seed. “The UAE has expressed interest in working with Alberta to address food security needs. Building on this relationship aligns with Alberta’s strategic plan to establish the province as an attractive market for investors across the globe,” said the province. 8
