newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Unison, the company that operates the Veiner Centre and the Kerby Centre in Calgary, is calling for more support for Alberta seniors who experience elder abuse, and is reminding victims to call EARL. “With so few shelter options, the Elder Abuse Resource Line plays a critical role in protecting vulnerable seniors,” reads a Monday release saying the resource line is urgently needed as support options in the province remain scarce. According to Unison, approximately 23,000 Albertans experience abuse every year in the form of neglect, physical, financial, emotional, verbal or sexual. Aside from the Sage Senior Safe House in Edmonton and the Unison’s Elder Abuse Shelter in Calgary, finding a shelter for seniors fleeing abuse is difficult outside major urban centres. “EARL offers a vital lifeline and can be the first step out of danger for seniors who feel isolated or afraid to speak out.” Seniors experiencing abuse can call EARL 24/7 across the province, as well as concerned family members or friends of individuals who would like to report signs of abuse. The support line received more than 1,000 calls for services in 2025, including consultations, resource provision or finding shelter space. EARL can be reached at 403-705-3250. Individuals in Medicine Hat can also find information and resources on elder abuse on the Unison’s website under the “Elder Abuse” tab. 9
