Regardless of the outcome of the petition to recall Premier and Brooks-Medicine Hart MLA Danielle Smith, organizers believe the result will be positive.

Momentum is strong among canvassers, says petition applicant Heather Van Snick.

“We have a great bunch of canvassers who are excited to be out there pounding the pavement, doing their thing and getting signatures every day in all kinds of places,” said Van Snick. “Momentum is really building, it’s just getting more exciting as the clock ticks down.”

Van Snick says due to growing concern surrounding potential changes to recall legislation, the team is not giving out any information regarding the number of signatures currently collected.

“In the spirit of her possibly changing the rules, we don’t want to share the numbers. We’re keeping those under wraps,” said Van Snick. “What I do want to say is we have pulled our community together in such an amazing way. Everybody is working together for a common cause.”

Community response has been more positive than negative, says Van Snick. While they have experienced some pushback, she believes in turning lemons into lemonade as she continues to co-ordinate not only with her organizers but with members of the team working to recall Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright.

Those interested in keeping informed or getting involved with the campaign as a canvasser are encouraged to visit their Facebook page.

“We’re always looking for more people for the team,” said Van Snick. “We want people to remember that this is about humanity over power. It’s not about left or right, it’s about putting our community first.”

The petition has until March 10 to collect a total of 12,070 signatures.
