Medicine Hat firefighters are cautioning residents to stay away from frozen bodies of water as warmer temperatures make ice unpredictable and unsafe.
Following a record high temperature Wednesday in the Hat, local fire crews have posted a public announcement warning of the dangers of frozen surfaces in warmer weather.
“Ice can weaken quickly, even if it appears solid,” says the announcement. “We strongly encourage everyone to stay off the river completely, and before going on ponds to skate, ensure ice thickness is adequate and conditions are safe.”
Firefighters recommended ice thickness to be at least four to six inches for safe use.
Last month fire crews responded to three calls related to ice and aquatics rescue. As well, a man’s body was pulled from Rattlesnake Lake on New Year’s Day by crew from Bow Island Fire Department after he had fallen through the ice.
