Today outreach officers from Service Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency will visit the Unison at Veiner Centre to assist seniors with several tax and income related issues.

From 9-11:30 a.m. CRA specialists will assist with obtaining tax slips, notice of assessment, updating contact information and answering income questions.

At the same time, specialists from Service Canada will help with Old Age Security, Canadian Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Canadian Dental Care Plan services, as well as assisting with change of addresses.

The support clinic runs prior to Veiner Centre’s annual free tax clinic at the end of February, assisting seniors with completing income taxes and making sure they qualify for all senior benefits offered by the province.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

Leading up to the National Day of Action against Alzheimer’s disease at the end of the month, Canada recognizes January as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, which focuses on combating the stigma and supporting those affected.

The Veiner Centre has posted an online Dementia Resource Toolkit created by My Health Alberta to help support individuals and families battling the several types of the progressive brain disorder and most common cause of dementia.

The Dementia Resource Toolkit includes useful information on living with the disease and how to prepare for the late stages of dementia while providing several resources available in the province.

On Jan. 28 various Alzheimer societies across the country will host events to highlight a National Day of Action, and Canadians are encouraged to use the social media hashtag #ForgetNoOne to emphasize that no one should face dementia alone.

A link to the online toolkit can be found by visiting the Unison at Veiner Centre on Facebook.

Caregiver workshop

The Veiner Centre on Thursday is hosting a free presentation and informative session with a focus on supporting caregivers.

The free Caring for the Caregiver workshop will be held in the North MP room from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and will offer tools, resources and reassurance to help restore balance and improve personal well-being.

The workshop will include a presentation from Trevor Moore, a caregiver support and burnout prevention expert, and will include Unison Connect Link Workers and Senior Supports.

Members and non-members are invited to call the Veiner Centre at 403-529-8307 to register for the workshop or in person at the reception desk.

Upcycle painting group

The Veiner Centre has announced a new paint group that will give old items a new life.

The Upscale Painting Group will allow participants to repaint old items including canvases, books, clothing, wooden prices and more.

“Bring your own projects and supplies and transform them into something beautiful and unique,” reads promotional material for the art class.

Participants will be able to work at their own pace with guidance from an art instructor.

The paint group will meet from 2-4 p.m. in the Craft Room every second Saturday of each month.

To register call 403-529-8307, or visit the Veiner Centre reception desk.

Rock painting program returns

Painters can also register for the popular monthly rock-painting program.

This year, new instructor Kat will run the painting program, open to everyone with an extra rock laying around.

Participants are asked to bring their own rocks, while all other supplies will be provided.

The classes run the third Wednesday of each month from 2-4 p.m. in the Craft Room.

To register, call 403-529-8307.
