newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com After securing a building permit from the city, CORE Association will begin construction on a new community living home in Southlands this spring. The association, which provides living opportunities for adults living with developmental disabilities and their families, announced it is working with the city on relocation of utilities for the property and plans to begin construction in spring to prevent any extra expenses linked to winter building. The home will be designed to support individuals specially with autism. “Our goal is to create a space that offers comfort, stability and opportunities for growth,” said executive director Deb Shaw. “This project reflects our commitment to inclusion, respect and meaningful care.” The announcement was part of the CORE Association’s January newsletter that also included a wrap-up from the fourth quarter of 2025 and a recap of fundraising efforts and donations. In October the association celebrated several staff members for lengthy terms of service, including both Gladys Nickel and Elaine Fitzsimmons, who have been with CORE for 25 years. In November, participants in the maintenance skills program repurposed wood to make Christmas decorations, and members were involved in an evening performance of the Immanuel Lights of Lethbridge held in partnership with Medicine Hat College Chaplain Services. CORE staff and members visited students at St. Louis School on Dec. 3 during International Day of Persons with Disabilities and presented various topics about disabilities with students. The association also says it has not yet hit its fundraising goal to sell 1,000 cash calendars for 2026, although sales have been steady. Cash calendars can still be purchased and include 27 total draws for more than $8,000 in cash and prizes. “We’re grateful to everyone who participated, and we can’t wait to celebrate our winners throughout the year,” said Shaw. Through all fundraising events, including Immanuel Lights, Midnight Madness, raffles and calendar sales, CORE raised more than $30,000 in donations in 2025. Additionally the association received more than $40,000 from AGLC bingo and casino events held last year. The next charity bingo event runs during the afternoon on Jan. 21 and CORE is seeking volunteers. 15
