Bassano RCMP seek suspect for multi-vehicle break-ins

Mounties in Bassano are seeking public assistance for information on a suspect believed to be responsible for a string of vehicle thefts which occurred in the early morning hours last Sunday.

RCMP responded to numerous calls of vehicles that were entered and several attempts made to enter other vehicles between 2:30 and 4 a.m. on Jan. 4, most of the thefts occurring between the 400-800 blocks of Third and Fourth avenues.

Police say the suspect managed to steal backpacks, cash and wallets left within the vehicles which were left unlocked.

According to CCTV footage obtained by officers, the suspect is described as average-build, unknown age or gender with their face covered. The suspect was wearing a dark jacket with fur lining, a white hoodie, white toque, dark pants and was carrying a large white shopping bag.

RCMP is asking anyone with information on the suspect to contact the local detachment at 403-641-3677, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Mounties also remind residents to keep vehicles locked at all times when not running.

“This continues to be a contributing factor in all recent thefts and stolen vehicles files this past year,” said Sgt. Joe Schmidt. “Please do not leave any valuables in your vehicle which thieves target. “Thieves are opportunistic and do not want to work hard for anything they have, but they will gladly take anything you work hard for. Let’s not keep making it easier for them.”
