Medicine Hat firefighters responded to 240 calls for service in December and members also participated in several holiday events giving back to the community.

Crews were dispatched to four structure fires calls and eight outdoor fires last month, as well as responding to three ice and aquatic related incidents.

Firefighters also responded to 83 medical events, 22 motor vehicle collisions, 56 alarms calls and 26 calls related to carbon monoxide and other gases.

Before students left class for winter break, local firefighters welcomed Grade 6 student Foster Sissons to experience a day in the life of a first responder as he was named Fire Chief for a Day on Dec. 10.

Sissons was selected winner of the Fire Chief for the Day contest held annually by the Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services held during Fire Prevention Week and was provided a tour of the 911 dispatch centre, Station No. 2 and 3 and trained with crews on emergency equipment.

Leading up to the holidays local firefighters also spent time volunteering with the Brown Bag Lunch program at Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub preparing lunches for children and families and were also on hand during the Medicine Hat Stampede & Exhibition’s annual Olde Tyme Christmas Fair.

Increasing their presence on social media, several members of the local department participated in a short video with a comically themed message reminding residents of fire risks involved with Christmas trees.
