Sarah MacKenzie has been reappointed chair of the Medicine Hat College board of governors and will continue in her role providing strategic oversight, financial stewardship and policy guidance at the college.

MacKenzie has served on the board of governors for six years and was first appointed chair in 2022.

Under her leadership the board has approved four new programs at the college including Sport and Event Marketing and Management, Service Dog and Canine Studies Management, Addictions Counselling and Pharmacy Technician.

Beyond her role at MHC, MacKenzie is a licensed real estate professional and serves on Tourism Medicine Hat’s Sport and Event Advisory Committee.

MacKenzie also served as past president of the Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Invest Medicine Hat Advisory Committee, plus leadership roles in local and provincial lacrosse associations.

In June, her contributions toward the community were recognized when she was formally presented with the King Charles III Coronation Medal, which was created in 2023 to recognize individuals who’ve made significant contributions.

“I am proud of the work accomplished to strengthen Medicine Hat College and its impact in the region,” said MacKenzie. “Together, the board has renewed our governance, expanded program offerings and deepened advocacy for the vital role we play in our community.”

Looking forward, MacKenzie says the board will be focused on creating more opportunities through the Centre for Community Wellness project, which has three key components including expanding Indigenous teaching and learning, wellness and health simulation.

“Over my next term, I plan to build on our momentum, ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our students and the communities we serve,” adds MacKenzie.

The college officially opened the doors to the Co-op Wellness Commons in October with financial support from provincial and federal governments.

The board of governors typically meets five times per year and includes seven public members, one academic member, two student members and one non-academic member.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 10.
