newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com In a press release issued Thursday, Canada Post says mail and parcel deliveries in Medicine Hat may be affected by increasing winter conditions, which have posed a safety risk for local employees. According to the release, local mail and parcel deliveries are moving as expected, however deteriorating weather conditions may pose hazards for delivery agents as they carry parcels and letter mail to doorsteps. The postal service says freeze and thaw from downspout and eavestroughs and exhaust from vehicles warming up can make sidewalks and driveways slippery. Holiday decorations on railings can also impede workers from using the railings for balance and safety. Additionally Canada Post says icicles forming on roofs can become a hazard. “These conditions are why we’re reminding homeowners and businesses to help us deliver letters and parcels safely by keeping a clear and safe path to their home or business,” reads the release. Canada Post has also provided homeowners in Medicine Hat and southeast Alberta some tips to ensure their deliveries arrive on time this holiday season. – Remove snow and ice from your walkways, driveway, and around your mailbox. – De-ice your stairs, entrance, and the path to your mailbox, using sand or salt. – Keep your stairs, handrails, and mailbox free of obstructions, and in good repair. – Turn on outdoor lighting to keep pathways and stairs visible. – When driving – especially in neighbourhoods – be mindful of delivery agents as they deliver letters and parcels. “With everyone’s support, we can help avoid an injury that can happen in just seconds.” 14
