The City of Medicine Hat will have three locations for Hatters to recycle their Christmas trees following the holiday.

The locations will be set up on Christmas Day and residents will be able to recycle their real Christmas trees until Jan. 30.

Trees can be dropped off at bulk recycling depots located at 20 Northlands Way NE (Northlands Co-op Recycling Depot) 240 Kipling Street SE and 3292 Dunmore Road SE (southwest corner of the Medicine Hat Mall parking lot.)

Residents can also dispose of trees at the city’s Compost Facility located at the landfill.

City staff ask residents to make sure all plastic bags, stands, tinsel and decorations have been removed from trees before recycling.

Artificial trees cannot be recycled in this program or put in blue recycling carts.

Staff say if you have an artificial tree that can no longer be used or donated, it should be discarded in a grey waste bin or taken to the landfill.

As of Thursday, weather conditions at the city’s landfill have caused a temporary closure of the facility until conditions improve.

The closure is expected to be removed once the facility is capable of safely accepting all waste materials again.
