Residential building permits in Medicine Hat for the month of November are up slightly compared to the same month in 2024. However, the total value of all buildings for which permits have been approved is still substantially higher than in 2024, helped by the approval of the Holy Trinity Academy school.
Both the total number of permits issued and the total budget for those permits is less than in October of last year.
Four permits were issued last month, for a total value of $2.1 million. The approved builds consist of one single-family home, two duplexes and one apartment with two units.
In October 2024, permits were issued for one single-family dwelling and one apartment with two units, valued at a total of just over $646,000.
No commercial building permits were issued this month.
The total budget for the 33 permits issued for residential and non-residential builds and alterations in November totalled $4.6 million.
Last year’s November budget was substantially higher, due mainly to an institutional permit valued at $43.7 million.
Still, the year-to-date numbers reflect a much higher value for the total permits issued through November than in 2024. The 551 permits issued in 2025 apply to builds budgeting $149.2 million. While more permits were issued by this time last year, the value of those permits was notably less, with 607 permits at a budget of $107.9 million.
