A respiratory illness outbreak has been declared at Crescent Heights High School.

A letter sent out Tuesday by Primary Care Alberta states that based on a cluster of students being ill with respiratory symptoms, parents have been notified and asked to keep their sick children home.

Students should be kept home until symptoms improve and they have been free of fever for 24 hours without the use of medication.

Common symptoms of respiratory illness include cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, loss or altered sense of taste/smell, nasal congestion and fever, but may also include fatigue, muscle ache or joint pain, headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Those who are not presently sick can reduce their risk of contracting illness by practicing frequent hand washing, cleaning surfaces that are commonly touched such as door knobs and bathroom taps and if not already immunized to consider the influenza vaccine.

Covering one’s mouth while sneezing and coughing is also recommended to reduce transmission.

Those seeking more information are encouraged to refer to MyHealth.Alberta.ca, or call 811 for healthcare information.
