Pair charged after suspicious vehicle report leads to weapons seizure

Two men have been charged with numerous weapons-related offences following an arrest in the area of Dunmore Road and 21st Street SE on Friday.

Medicine Hat police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle with a male sleeping behind the steering wheel on Friday. Officers found 58-year-old Clinton Mayer behind the wheel, 62-year-old Daniel Giurissevich in the rear and an unnamed 62-year-old female in the passenger seat.

Giurissevich was wanted on several outstanding warrants, and a bolt-action rifle was discovered in his jacket during his arrest.

The officers subsequently searched the vehicle and seized a bolt-action rifle with a scope, 44 rounds of ammunition, various knives and a carton of black stock cigarettes.

Mayer and Giurissevich were both charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm in a vehicle and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Mayer was additionally charged with three counts of breach of a release order. Giurissevich was additionally charged with three counts of possession of a weapon contrary to an order.

Both men were held for a judicial interim release hearing and remained in custody, pending an appearance before the Alberta Court of Justice on Tuesday.
