asmith@medicinehatnews.com Four new recall petitions have been approved to begin collecting signatures by Alberta’s chief electoral officer Gordon McClure. Applications were found to meet the requirements of section 3(1) of the Recall Act for Calgary-Beddington MLA Amanda Chapman, Calgary-East MLA Peter Singh, Calgary-Peigan MLA Tanya Fir and Red Deer-North MLA Adriana LaGrange. Notably, Fir also serves as the minister of Arts, Culture and the Status of Women ,and LaGrange serves as the minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services. These latest approved petitions add three more UCP members to the list of representatives potentially facing recall, as well as Chapman, Alberta NDP’s shadow minister of Education. Elections Alberta told the News that they are unable to confirm the approval of the recall petition against Premier Danielle Smith. Organizers told reporters they received approval Tuesday. According to Elections Alberta protocol, the subject of a recall has seven days following approval to provide a statement, after which the petition will be issued either way. All four MLAs announced Friday have submitted responses addressing the concerns put forward by their respective applicants. Chapman stated that “of the thousands of pieces of correspondence received by my office, 99 per cent asked their MLA to support teachers and speak out about class size/complexity,” and encouraged residents to reach out so she can best represent them in the legislature. Singh’s response reaffirmed his commitment to “representing [his] community with integrity and respect” and his focus on “results for families, seniors and small businesses, responding to concerns and ensuring Calgary-East has a strong voice in the legislature.” “As a dedicated MLA, I work hard to serve all my constituents, amidst widely varying views, to deliver results for groups in Calgary- Peigan,” said Fir, listing secured investments for the region. Both Singh and Fir mention the Recall Act itself in their statements, with Fir adding that ” It’s clear this recall is a coordinated attempt to weaponize recall legislation and overturn democratic elections due to policy disagreements.” LaGrange addressed layoffs during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that these temporary layoffs for education permitted access to programs such as CERB and redirected funds toward frontline healthcare. She also states that she was not minister of health when matters currently before the courts were negotiated. 13
