One of Medicine Hat’s nearest ski getaways, Castle Mountain Resort, is opening for its landmark 60th season Friday.
Skiers and snowboarders attending on opening day will have access to Green Chair and Buckaroo Carpet, and snowmaking efforts are well underway to open Huckleberry Chair as soon as possible.
This season, Castle Mountain will be opening its first ever high-speed chairlift, the Stagecoach Express, which is set to launch early in the new year. The chairlift is a refurbished quad chair that formerly serviced Sunshine Village.
Thanks to the new lift, snow lovers will unlock access to more than 21 new runs. Between the old and the new, Castle’s terrain will include 115 runs across almost 3,600 acres.
Castle Mountain is the second largest mountain resort in Alberta by acreage.
“We are incredibly proud to be celebrating 60 years of Castle Mountain Resort,” said Cole Fawcett, Castle Mountain Resort sales and marketing manager. “Castle has always been a place built by skiers, for skiers – a community grounded in authenticity and passion for downhill recreation.
“The addition of our first high-speed lift will not only open up incredible new terrain to all of our guests but also mark the start of a new era for the resort. It’s an investment in our future that we hope will reinforce Castle’s legacy of delivering uncrowded slopes, deep snow, big terrain and a friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere.”
Castle Mountain has indefinitely paused its ‘Cat-skiing’ operations to instal the new lift and open up previously exclusive terrain to all visitors.
The resort is holding a food bank fundraiser to kick off this season. Castle Mountain will donate $1 per visit from Dec. 5 to Dec. 7 to provide food for Albertans in need. The weekend’s donation will be matched by Co-op Pincher Creek.
