newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com A Medicine Hat business owner posted on social media this weekend that an application to launch a recall petition for Premier Danielle Smith has been submitted. McBride’s Bakery shared a post to Facebook on Sunday announcing that Elections Alberta has received the application. While the owners of McBride’s stressed that they are not the proponent of the petition, they say they have offered the business as a base for canvassers to collect signatures once the application is approved. News about the outcome of the application is expected as soon as Friday. “None of the bakery staff are canvassers, and the bakery will not have a petition available for signing at all times. The bakery staff are employees, not activists, and they are not available for political discussions with the public,” reads the Facebook post. The post stresses that canvassers will not solicit for signatures and that customers are not expected to sign. On the flip side, the statement says that Hatters interested in signing are welcome to stop by the bakery and will not be expected to make a purchase if they are stopping by to sign. There will be additional places to sign the petition outside of McBride’s. “I do not live in [Smith’s] riding, so I cannot sign the petition, nor can I be an eligible canvasser,” reads the Facebook post. “I can still go door-to-door with canvassers, though, and assist the process in other ways, like providing free donuts and space.” Elections Alberta has not yet approved the petition. If the petition is approved, it will require approximately 12,000 signatures to advance to a vote, which would be held within four months of verification. 11
