Elections Alberta completed verification for the Forever Canadian citizen initiative petition Monday.

The petition smashed through the threshold required for the petition to advance. The initiative required 293,976 signatures, or 10 per cent of the electors from the provincial general election. It collected 438,568 signatures.

With results now verified, the UCP government will have to adhere to the duties established in Citizen Initiative Act, which requires that the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly lays the proposal before the assembly.

Within 10 sitting days, the government is obligated to bring forward a motion to have the proposal referred to a committee in the legislative assembly.

The committee will then have to table a report with respect to the policy proposal at the earliest practicable opportunity, or else the policy proposal must be referred to the Lieutenant Governor in Council for the purpose of a referendum.

After that, the committee will be required to either table a report with respect to the policy proposal, or refer the question to a referendum.

If the committee recommends a referendum, it must be held on or before the next provincial general election, which is scheduled for Oct. 18, 2027.

The proposed question for the policy proposal is, “Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?”
