Sources suggest the government may amend, or altogether repeal its own Recall Act next week in response to 14 recall drives affecting only UCP MLAs.

In response to questions about the recall drive targeting Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides in the assembly last week, Smith appeared confident that her MLAs record of service would speak for itself.

“This is a record that my minister is going to be able to stand on, and I know he can’t wait to go out there and campaign on it,” she said.

Smith also accused the opposition of manipulating the legislation in an attempt to “overthrow” her government.

The News contacted the office of the premier for comment Friday but was directed to her comments on the Nov. 22 episode of her biweekly radio show.

In conversation with host Wayne Nelson, Smith said the legislation was adopted to allow voters the power to respond to fraud or incompetence

“It’s been weaponized by various union-aligned public interest groups, and the legislation is pretty clear that it’s got to be locally run, local people doing the door-knocking, local fundraising, and it looks to me that there’s some procedural issues there where that’s not happening,” she said.

“I hope the spirit of the law is lived up to in future, but we’ll be doing some consultation with our members when we go to our AGM to see if there’s any modifications that need to be made to make sure it gets back to the original principle of it.”

The premier then confirmed that she is considering a possible amendment to the legislation.

The UCP’s AGM takes place this weekend, from Nov. 28-30.
