Students in Grade 12 will not have to take their diploma exams this January. Similarly, Grade 9 students will not have to take their upcoming Provincial Achievement Test after the province announced it was canceling the examinations Friday.

The province says the cancellation was made to ensure students can concentrate on learning after losing close to a month of instructional time due to the provincial-wide teachers strike.

The Ministry of Education says the cancellation will not affect applications into post-secondary institutions as the province will be applying at notation on student transcripts confirming that no diploma exam was written.

“This ensures there is no impact to students’ abilities to graduate or transition into post-secondary programs,” reads a press release.

Students who choose to write the exams still will be provided an opportunity next April and will receive their school-award mark as their final official course mark, however this is completely optional.

The government has informed all school authorities province-wide of the cancellations and requires all school authorities to communicate any changes to their school calendar to families and guardians of students.
