Residential building permits in Medicine Hat for the month of September are up compared to this time last year, according to figures released by the city’s planning department.
Permits for three single-family houses and four duplexes were issued in September, compared to only two single-family house permits in September 2024.
The total estimated value of approved residential construction projects for the year 2025 to date is also notably higher than in 2024. The 25 permits issued so far amount to $11,908,113 in value, versus only 19 permits valued at $7,138,572 as of September last year.
The average value of residential builds approved this year has climbed by just over $100,000 per permit over last year.
No new commercial construction permits were issued this month. No new commercial building permits have been issued in 2025 to date.
By September 2024, three commercial permits and one industrial permit had been issued for a total value of $2.87 million.
The total value of all new building permits issued in Medicine Hat across the first three quarters of the year is up significantly from last year, currently sitting at just over $138 million compared to last year’s $51 million.
The increase in value comes despite an overall decrease in approved permits, from 504 as of September 2024 to 456 as of September 2025.
The value is inflated significantly by the approval of the permit for the new Holy Trinity Academy school the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is building near Monsignor McCoy High School. That project is valued at $67 million. The permit was approved in June.
