A total of 90 new trees of a variety of species have been planted in four locations around the city to replace those removed due to drought conditions or reaching the end of their life cycle.

The saplings have been planted with protective fencing at Gas City Campground, Celebration Park, Cypress Way median and along Old Cemetery Road.

Several tree species were selected which are known to tolerate growing conditions in southeast Alberta and will help ensure more diversity within the city’s urban forest.

Tree varieties include the Siberian Larch, Ponderosa Pine, Silver Maple, Brandon Elm, Bur Oak, Honey Locust Golden Willow and Dropmore Linden.

“This ongoing work will continue to revitalize our beautiful tree network, which our community takes immense pride in,” reads a public announcement.

Cooler temperatures and autumn rainfall are beneficial for news trees in Alberta as the conditions help roots become established before entering winter dormancy.

The city says tree planting is standard practice during autumn as soil is able to remain warm enough to support growth, allowing saplings to prepare for growth in the spring.
