The Legislative Assembly Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund is hosting its annual public meeting today to discuss investment activities and performance. The event will take place from 6-8 p.m.

“This public meeting is an opportunity for Albertans to participate in an in-depth conversation with Members of the Legislative Assembly and those who oversee the fund’s management and investment,” said Tany Yao, MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo and Chair of the Committee in a statement Tuesday. “We look forward to engaging with Albertans to help more people understand the importance of the fund.”

The fund is the province’s main long-term savings account. It was started in 1976 using savings from Alberta’s non-renewable resources with the goal of protecting the province’s finances from the volatility of the resource revenue market.

In January, Premier Danielle Smith announced a new Crown corporation to oversee the fund. Smith says she hopes to grow the fund to at least $250 billion by 2050. Its last valuation, dating back to July, was a record high $30 billion.

Members of the public are invited to attend in person in Edmonton, or watch live on Alberta Assembly TV, available on the Alberta assembly webpage and social media channels.

The meeting will begin with an update on the fund’s performance by experts from Alberta Treasury Board and Finance and the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), which manages the fund. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Participants can pose questions to officials and to the committee via Facebook and X using #abheritagefund, or by email at committee.admin@assembly.ab.ca. Remote participants can also use the designated telephone line 1-800-717-1738 using code 79940. The line will only be active during the meting.

Remote participants are encouraged to submit comments or questions in advance of the meeting at the Alberta assembly webpage.
