Saturday morning the city will be hosting a brief ceremonial event outside City Hall to commemorate the installation of a new Veterans’ Crosswalk at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and First Street SE, connecting City Hall to Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park.

The crosswalk to honour Veterans is painted with specialized traffic marking paint in Legion standard custom white and red colours. The crosswalk reads, “Lest we forgot” and features a silhouette of a soldier.

The Remembrance Poppy is absent from the crosswalk as it is a Legion trademark and is not to be used in a situation where it is to be walked upon.

“The Poppy should never be used on a crosswalk or where the symbol of Remembrance can be trod upon,” states the Royal Canadian Legion.

City Councillors approved a motion to support the request of a commemorative crosswalk from resident Edward Devine during a Sept. 15 meeting.

“The City of Medicine Hat appreciates this opportunity to honour the service of the veterans who fought in the name of peace, and the sacrifice of those who gave their lives defending it,” reads a press release which thanked Divine for bringing the request forward to council. “It has been an honour to ensure this initiative comes to fruition as we approach Remembrance Day.”

The ceremony is planned for half an hour and begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in the plaza on the east side of City Hall.

The roadway will remain open to minimize the disruption to traffic.
