newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com RCMP are reminding residents in Brooks and the County of Newell area to remain vigilant following an increase in attempted vehicle thefts and petty thefts. Police are reminding residents to lock vehicles and homes at all times, remove any valuables, tools and keys from vehicles and report any suspicious activity to police immediately. The public statement was issued following a handful of recent thefts including a break and enter at a business in the Joanne Trucking Road industrial area in the morning of Oct. 17, after thieves crashed side-by-side and broke into four vehicles on the property. Mounties also responded to two theft under $5,000 calls on Oct. 20 at a business in Duchess. Police are searching for a white mid-2000s GMC half-ton pickup with black fenders believed to be the suspect’s vehicle after two males attempted to remove a change machine for the wall using a hammer, crowbar and drill. Last week RCMP in Brooks also issued a public statement aimed at rural property owners and local producers, encouraging those residents to take extra precautions to secure machinery, tools and outbuildings. By taking proactive steps, such as improving lighting, locking gates and storage areas, and recording serial numbers, rural property owners can help reduce the risk of theft and safeguard their livelihood. Mounties suggest locking up combines, tractors and other equipment when not in use, and store tools, fuel and chemicals away in a secure, well-lit building. Farm theft causes real harm to hardworking people. Our officers are increasing patrols and working closely with farmers to prevent further losses,” said Sgt. David Searle. Proactively working with neighbours to watch for unusual activity in the area and installing motion-activated lighting or cameras on outbuilding can also prevent property crime. 11
