newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Const. Chan Lee of the Medicine Hat Police Service has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon following an investigation into a use of force complaint. The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services was notified of the use of force event which occurred on Jan. 26, giving rise to a criminal investigation initiated by MHPS. The Ministry did not receive a public complaint, however it was notified of the event by MHPS in accordance with the Alberta Police Act. On Wednesday, Lee was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and was released on an appearance notice. Lee is scheduled to appear before the courts on Nov. 25. Since the investigation began early this year, Lee has been assigned to administrative duties and will remain in that role pending the court’s decision. According to the Officer of the Chief, Lee’s duty status will be reviewed upon the conclusion of the court proceedings to ensure all decisions are made fairly and in accordance with the law. “The MHPS is committed to maintaining the highest standards of accountability and transparency,” reads a press release. “We initiated a thorough review of this incident, in the absence of a public complaint, to ensure that our actions align with community and legal standards.” Police say there will be no further information provided as the matter is now before the courts. 10
