newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com It’s not only election week in Medicine Hat, but Small Business Week. From Oct. 19 to Oct. 25, small businesses and the people who run them are being celebrated by a number of events and initiatives. “Small Business Week is a time to celebrate the passion, resilience and innovation of Alberta’s entrepreneurs,” said Tany Yao, Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Northern Development, this week. Small businesses represent more than 95 per cent of all businesses and employ almost 35 per cent of private sector workers in the province. Nearly one in four people living in Alberta is starting or has recently launched a business. “Small businesses are the backbone of our regional economy,” said Aaron Fleming, president of the southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce. “As we navigate this new economic era, it’s more important than ever to equip our business community with the tools, insights, and support they need to succeed.” The Chamber has hosted several events in line with the 2025’s Small Business Week theme, “The Economic Revolution is Here – Get Your Business Ready,” including a disability employment awareness month luncheon. On Oct. 22 the Chamber is also hosting its Leadership Breakfast, which will include an interactive panel of senior leadership from the city, Cypress County and Redcliff. The week wraps up with the Reality Bytes Leadership Summit held at one of the city’s oldest and most historic businesses, the Monarch Theatre. The Chamber encourages Hatters to participate in its Local First Initiative by displaying decals in businesses, sharing stories online and choosing local whenever possible. 10
